Why Spring Timing Is Everything
In the Oshawa and Durham Region climate, the window between "too wet to work the lawn" and "already growing fast" is surprisingly narrow. Homeowners who get the timing right in April and May consistently have the best-looking lawns through August.
Step One: Assessment
Walk your property before touching anything. Look for winter kill (brown patches that didn't come back), frost heaving (soil pushing plant roots upward), and any damage from snow clearing equipment or road salt runoff near curbs and sidewalks. Understanding what you're dealing with shapes everything else.
Step Two: Cleanup
Remove any debris — fallen branches, matted leaves, and anything else that accumulated over winter. Matted material left on the lawn blocks light and air, creating ideal conditions for snow mould and other fungal issues.
Step Three: First Cut
Don't rush the first mow. Wait until the grass has reached about 3 inches and the soil has dried enough to support foot traffic and equipment without compacting. The first cut of the season should take off no more than an inch — a light trim rather than a full cut.
Step Four: Edge Work
Spring is the right time to re-establish clean edges along driveways, walkways, and garden beds. Sharp, defined edges give the entire property a maintained look that regular mowing alone can't achieve.
